The tumescent technique can be used using only local anesthesia. This means that general anesthesia does not need to be applied and the patient will be awake the entire time. This actually reduces the risks associated with lypoplasty, because many complications in the past have been associated with general anesthesia. However, there are still risks associated with local anesthesia that need to be discussed.
The most common local anesthesia administered in lidocaine. Lidocaine can be toxic if the dose is too high, and this can be dangerous to a patient. However, surgeons should be aware of this danger, and know that it could be dangerous to give a patient a dose of lidocaine that is above 50 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. After lidocaine has been injected into the bloodstream it will increase in concentration. It will continue to increase until it peaks, at which point it begins to decline. It is the peak concentration that should concern patients and surgeons. Lidocaine has a very slow absorption rate however, which makes the possibility of toxicity fairly low.
Lidocaine toxicity is really a fairly low risk, but there are other risks that may be associated with the tumescent method. As in all surgeries, negative drug interactions may occur if you have taken any drugs close to the time of surgery. Some drugs like Zoloft, erythromycin, ketoconazole, or Fluconazole can impair an enzyme in the liver that is required to metabolize lidocaine. This will cause the peak amount of lidocaine to be higher than is otherwise would have been without the interference of the other drugs. It is always important to let your surgeon know of any medications, either prescribed or otherwise, which you are taken, or have taken recently.
One of the upsides of the tumescent technique is that local anesthesia can act as a kind of antibacterial solution. There is a very low rate of post operative infection associated with the tumescent method of liposuction, as compared to almost any other surgical procedure. The tumescent technique is one of the safest forms of liposuction available. Of course, you still need to be smart about how you go about getting liposuction, even if you choose the tumescent method. Too much surgery, even using the tumescent technique, in one day will be dangerous. There are always risks in surgical procedures and the tumescent method is no exception. Make sure you talk to your surgeon and are both aware of what is appropriate for you when undergoing any procedure you choose.
