The time has come for moving and you now have to pack all those belongings to make the trip. You definitely don't want those valuable things broken or crushed. You don't want to tear up your back lifting the packed boxes either. The question is, "What boxes do I use for what items"?

You should choose as follows:

1. For books, compact discs, movies, and other heavier items you should use a small or book box. This allows you to pack the items safely and yet will not be too heavy for lifting and carrying.

2. A medium box is the perfect size for pots and pans. You can also use this size box for spices, cling wrap, foil, utensils and other fairly bulky kitchen items. This size box is also a good fit for the clothes out of the dresser drawers and the miscellaneous bedroom and living room items.

3. A large box will hold your bedding, towels, washcloths, and other bulky light weight items. Don't put books or heavy items in a large box, you will have a hard time lifting it.

4. Dishes and glassware should be put in a box specially designed for that purpose. There are dish pack boxes available that have separators and special foam sleeves to pack your dishes and glasses. These boxes are usually the same size as a medium box but made of heavier cardboard to better protect your fragile items.

5. Clothes from the closet that are on hangers can be packed in a wardrobe box. These boxes are tall enough to handle clothes on hangers and come with a special bar across the top to hang the clothes on. Each of these boxes will handle the clothes that are in about two feet of closet space. They allow you to keep your clothes on the hangers so that they don't end up with the nasty wrinkles and fold lines.

6. There are special boxes made for packing mirrors, hanging pictures, and framed art work. These are called mirror boxes and are just the right size for that portrait of grandpa hanging in the family room.

7. You can pack lamps in boxes that are specially made for that purpose. Like dish pack boxes, these boxes are constructed of heavier cardboard to better protect those fragile lamps. They are usually tall enough to accommodate most living room lamps.

When packing those fragile items don't forget to wrap them in either newsprint or bubble wrap. Another good alternative to boxes is the industrial type plastic totes with interlocking lids. These are available at most of the warehouse type membership stores. They cost a little more than cardboard boxes but they are stronger and protect your items in a damp environment. They also have the advantage of being uniform in size, can be stacked, and are the right size so they don't get too heavy. They also have handles that make them easier to pick up and carry.
