People of all ages want to lose weight and some become interested in cosmetic surgeries that can improve the appearance of the body. Liposuction involves the removal of fat, but it is done subtly with less-than-dramatic results. The success of this particular surgery depends on the recipient's expectations and the surgeon's experience and specific technique.

Expectations are very important when it comes to liposuction. In order for the surgery to be successful, the recipient of the surgery must have realistic expectations.

A lot of people would love to have liposuction, but not very many people understand what to realistically expect from the surgery.

Realistic expectations are grounded in solid knowledge. To begin with, people need to know a little about the human body and just what a healthy weight actually is.

There is a lot of controversy over exactly what constitutes a healthy weight. A lot of doctors use the Body Mass Index (or BMI) to determine whether a person is at a healthy weight.

The BMI is a chart that categorizes certain ranges of weight and height as "Normal, Overweight, and Obese."

Because the BMI doesn't take into account the differing bodies of males and females or the differences in bone structure and other genetic factors, many doctors don't use the BMI as a good standard by which to determine whether or not a person is overweight.

In any case, a doctor can be helpful in determining what weight is healthy for an individual.

The reason this all matters is that liposuction is only really effective for people who are already at a healthy weight. In BMI terms, that would be those who fall within the normal category.

People who are overweight or obese are not able to have as much success with liposuction and research has shown that it is also unsafe for those who are not at a healthy weight.

A few years of research has gradually improved liposuction technique. It has been proven that the surgery works best when only a few pounds are removed.

For best results, only three or four pounds can be removed from an isolated area of the body. Most surgeons set the limit at eight or ten pounds of fat, and usually they will only remove the fat from one or two areas of the body.

When people understand that only a small amount of fat is going to be removed, they can have some realistic idea of what to expect.

Looking at before and after photos can also be helpful in this way. Those who expect subtle improvements are most satisfied when the results begin to show.

Of course, the surgeon is responsible as well for the overall success of the surgery. When it is carefully planned and only a safe amount of fat is removed, the incidence of complications is low and success rates are high.
