The causes and conditions surrounding the onset of a headache determine the treatment. Understanding the different elements of a headache contributes to developing a good prevention and care program.

Almost everyone at some point experiences headaches, and for some they can be a constant source of suffering. They vary in intensity, have myriad causes, and display a range of symptoms. Receiving proper care and treatment for a headache first requires proper diagnosis.
Primary and Secondary Headaches -

Headaches are generally classified as either primary or secondary. Primary headaches are not caused by a previous health condition or another source. They can be caused by:

1. problems with neck muscles
2. sinus infections or allergies
3. poor vision
4. changes in the blood vessels inside the cranium are a contributing factor of migraines.

Secondary headaches are a by-product of some other condition or injury, and can be caused by:

1. head trauma
2. concussion
3. high blood pressure
4. side-effect of medication
5. illnesses
6. food additives

These lists are by no means inclusive. Most headaches begin gradually and go away after a short period of time. However, if you have a headache that strikes suddenly, or have one that has lingered over a period of time with little decrease in intensity, see a healthcare professional. Sudden and/or lingering headaches may be indicators of mere complex or serious problems.
Headache Prevention -

Headaches that are the result of muscle fatigue or tension can be averted through proper posture while sitting, standing and performing daily tasks.

" Keep computer monitors at eye level
" Sit and stand up straight
" Keep your neck erect when reading
" Take regular breaks from repetitive tasks, reading, and watching the computer monitor

In addition, pay attention to nutrition. Research suggests that certain diets may help with reducing the intensity and frequency of certain types of headaches.
Headache Symptoms -

Common headaches are sometimes described as an ache, either dull or throbbing, beginning at the base of the skull, traveling up and radiating out to the forehead and around the eyes. The pain may be on either or both sides of the head, and bright light and/or loud noises may exacerbate it. Some sufferers have been known to become nauseous as well.

Headache Diagnosis -

Once the symptoms have been described, proper diagnosis of the cause of the headache is the next step to receiving the proper treatment and care. A thorough medical history and physical examination will help to determine possible causes and viable treatment programs. The examination will help determine if the source of the headache is an easily treated condition, or if it something more serious.

If your headaches are recurring or they linger, your doctor may request x-rays, MRIs, or specific laboratory tests to understand the problem. The doctor may also request a daily journal detailing different aspects of the headache. This information may include: the day and time the headache occurs, its location, your activities at onset, its duration, and other details.

For those who suffer from headaches, relief cannot come fast enough. If a headache can't be prevented, proper diagnosis will help determine the kind of treatment that will work best.
